Top Tips for Nannies
Looking for your next nanny role in the UK? Here are our expert tips to help you stand out and secure the right job.
- Perfect Your CV
- Keep it clear, concise, and professional – no more than two pages.
- Highlight your childcare or housekeeping experience, including ages of children you’ve cared for.
- List any qualifications (e.g., Paediatric First Aid, CACHE Level 3, Norland diploma).
- Include references from previous employers.
- Be Interview-Ready
- Dress smartly and professionally, even if it’s a video interview or telephone chat (the client often will turn on the camera mid call)
- Research the family and be prepared to discuss your experience, skills, and approach to childcare.
- Speak Clearly and slowly and only answer the question you have been asked – when people are nervous they sometimes go off on a tangent.
- Be punctual, polite, and enthusiastic – personality matters as much as experience!
- If it’s a trial day, engage with the children naturally and show initiative.
- Get Your Documents in Order
Families and agencies will ask for:- Valid passport and right-to-work documents (British passport, visa, or settled status)
- Enhanced DBS check (or be willing to apply for one)
- Paediatric First Aid certificate
- Proof of address and references
- Show Your Flexibility & Reliability
- Be open about your availability and whether you can do live-in, live-out, full-time, part-time, or travel roles.
- Families appreciate reliability and commitment, so be honest about your long-term plans.
- If you can travel with families or have extra skills (e.g., cooking, driving), highlight them!
- Make a Great First Impression
- Parents want someone who is kind, trustworthy, and proactive.
- Show genuine enthusiasm for working with children or managing a household.
- Good manners, a friendly attitude, and a smile go a long way!

FAQ
Eight candidate questions:
Do I need qualifications to work as a nanny?
While formal qualifications aren’t always required, having a Paediatric First Aid certificate and childcare training (e.g., CACHE Level 3, Norland diploma) can improve your chances.
Do I need an Enhanced DBS check?
Yes, families and agencies require an Enhanced DBS check to ensure you can work safely with children. If you don’t have one, we can help you apply.
Do you recommend having nanny insurance?
Nanny Insurance provides financial protection in the event of an incident occurring whilst you are carrying out your professional duties, but having nanny insurance isn’t just about anticipating an accident – holding a nanny insurance policy can enhance your professionalism and help you in your career. We recommendNannyinsure.
When you join Nannyinsure, you’ll also get access to the Nannyhub, an exclusive online platform for nannies where you can find lots of helpful resources, activity & recipe packs, and discount codes too!
Can I apply if I need visa sponsorship?
Most UK families look for candidates with the right to work in the UK (British passport, Settled/Pre-Settled status, or a valid visa). Sponsorship is rare.
What are the typical working hours and salary?
- Live-in nannies: 10-12 hours per day, plus occasional babysitting.
- Live-out nannies: 8-10 hours per day.
- Salaries vary based on experience and location, typically £18-£25.
Do I need to be able to drive?
Not always, but families outside major cities may require a nanny with a driving licence.
Can I bring my own child to work?
Some families accept nanny shares or nannies with their own children, but it depends on their needs.
Will I have a contract?
Yes, all professional nannies should have a contract outlining salary, hours, holiday, and duties.
